Featured user: @kxtty

Emerald is from the US and her sisters call her “Mimi,” but you know this week’s featured user as @Kxtty on ShopLook. I love the way that she uses every bit of the canvas space in designs and her consistently cool editorial spin. Read her full Q&A below and check out some of her favorite designs below!

Tell us about your favorite fashion decade:

It’s a classic, but definitely the 90s. I base a lot of my style on photos of my mom from the 90s.

When you start a new design, what is the first thing that goes on your blank canvas?

I have to decide what the theme is before I start adding to the blank canvas. I first focus on the color scheme so nothing clashes together, I’m not fond of multiple bright colors if I can avoid it, and build around that or the main item that decides the set.

Describe your personal style in three words:

Comfortable, relaxed, neutral

Style icons:

Marie Antoinette, Audrey Hepburn, Cher, and my mom’s style from her late teen years.

Something in your closet that you could wear with everything for a week?

Combat boots, no ifs ands/or buts. I can style them with anything and everything.

Something that you would never wear?

Crocs. I understand they’re comfortable, but I’m way too clumsy and would end up with twice the foot injuries.

Something you would like to wear but haven’t?

Leather pants.

Something that you (almost) always include in your sets?

I use a lot of fillers to fill in gaps, but definitely stars.

Any fellow users that you find inspiring? Abbymae, alldressedupbutnowheretogo, Loxley, We_Girl, ampersands-1 (all of them are so amazing, and I love seeing their sets on my feed!)

Any advice for others looking to improve their creative process?

Forget the trends, do your own thing! Don’t make yourself follow a style or element that’s not your own. Once you find something you love, express that. Use that. When you start expressing yourself, and forget the likes, you’ll find it’s a lot more rewarding. Pardon the cliche speech!

Any favorite designs from your feed?

The sets I made during autumn of 2020! I fell in love with the reds and golds, and the jackets.

What is your iPhone wallpaper?

A replica of a Renaissance style painting

Fun fact others might not know about you?

Unsure how to answer this one! I’m a writer of ten years, perhaps?

Album you could listen to on repeat for an entire week?

Fall Out Boys’ “Mania”

Anything that you have bought recently and absolutely love?

I’ve had someone buy me a few summer-like button ups and I actually really like them, surprisingly.

Something that you used to wear but now makes you cringe?

Layered shirts from the 2000s. It was always that and cargo shorts.

Dream job?

It’s an odd and boring choice, but real estate.

Real life job?

I’m actually an overnight stocker. I had the chance to go to college but the pandemic happened, and it fell through.

How long have you been a part of the ShopLook community?

I was originally part of the Polyvore community — I started that in maybe 2013 or 2014, and all the way until it closed. I was originally creating outfits for characters and themes, but I became invested in it. I had always loved fashion, and it allowed me to explore different styles outside of my pajamas and slippers style.

Do you have a nickname, and how did you get it?

Mimi — my sisters couldn’t exactly say “Emmie” or “Emerald”, so it just worked for them. Kitty was a nickname from a friend.

What do all of the best sets have in common?

They all put in their own sense of style, and you can see a signature style with each of them. They’re never really the same, even when they’re using one item for a challenge.

Be sure to follow @kxtty on ShopLook if you don't already, and come back next week to learn more about a new featured user!
